Lacrimal Surgery
The lacrimal system is the drainage system for tears that accumulate in the eye. There are channels that run from the inner corners of the upper and lower eyelids into the nose. That is the reason why you can "taste" eye drops. Some children are born with blocked tear ducts. If they don't open spontaneously after one year, minor surgery is performed to open the channels. Massaging the inner corner against the bone can be helpful in opening the ducts during infancy.
Excessive tearing in adults can be caused by sinus or nasal inflammation or tumors. More extensive work-up and treatment is indicated in this situation.
