Pterygium

pterygium

Pterygium is a fleshy growth that may occur in the inner corner of the conjunctiva or the white tissue of the eye. It often extends across the cornea and can reduce vision. It sometimes becomes red and itchy.

Treatment may include:

  • Observation, with photographs
  • Eye drops
  • Pterygium surgery

Unfortunately, excising the pterygium can result in recurrence, but with modern techniques this occurs much less frequently than in the past. Typically, a graft is placed in the area of the excision which may be fixed in position with tissue glue.

Dr. Matzkin will give you more information regarding treatment for pterygium and its various treatments at your appointment.
